Sleep Stealers
This entry was posted on March 25, 2014.
Sleep is a valuable commodity. Get enough of it and you feel bright and strong and ready to take on the world. Get too little and you spend your days dragging and are far more likely to suffer from a number of health issues, including heart disease and obesity. Nearly every day’s news features another danger of sleep deprivation. Unfortunately, getting the sleep that you want and need isn’t always as easy as just lying down in bed and closing your eyes. If you are a person who is having a hard time getting the restful sleep that your body needs, you may be making one or more critical mistakes that are working against your best intentions. Here are the top sleep stealers that you can eliminate from your life:
- Eating and Drinking before Bed
Believing in the benefits of a cup of soothing herbal tea before bed has probably caused more interrupted sleep than any afternoon cup of coffee. Filling your bladder with hot water before you go to sleep is a guarantee that you will have to wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. Similarly, eating too big a meal or food that is high in spice or fat will give you indigestion that will keep you up for hours.
- Laying there and Worrying about Not Sleeping
If you are unable to sleep, one of the worst things that you can do is to lie there in your bed and think about it. Get up and remove yourself from the setting so that you don’t begin associating your bedroom with your stress.
- Trying to Sleep in the Wrong Environment
Sleeping in a room that is brightly lit, filled with noise, too warm or too cold is a recipe for sleepless disaster. When you are tired and ready to go to bed you need to ensure that your environment is conducive to relaxation. Temperature should be between 65 and 71 degrees, the room should be as dark and quiet as possible.
- Napping when Sleep is a Problem
If you generally get enough sleep and wake up feeling refreshed then an occasional nap in the face of drowsiness can be a good thing. But if sleepless nights or interrupted sleep are a constant in your life, taking a nap may be the worst thing you can do. It is far more important that you get a solid night’s sleep, and taking even a short nap in the middle of the day can prevent that from happening.
- Multitasking in your Bedroom
Your brain should associate your bedroom with sleep, not with work, video games or other forms of stimulation. Using electronics in your bedroom creates associations that can work against your ability to relax and sleep.
